Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Moscow is prepared to use all provisions of the Russia-Belarus Union State treaty to guarantee the security of Belarus and the broader Union State framework. The comments were reported by Interfax and RIA Novosti, both cited in Russian media coverage.
Lavrov made the remarks during a roundtable discussion on resolving the war in Ukraine, where he also reacted to statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky concerning Belarus. According to the Russian foreign minister, such comments are intended to pull Belarus directly into the conflict and widen the scope of hostilities.
“This is clearly aimed at drawing Belarus directly into the conflict and expanding the geography of hostilities, thereby complicating the possibilities of settling the conflict by political and diplomatic means,” Lavrov said.
He also referred to the Union State security treaty between Russia and Belarus, which he said came into force in March 2025, stressing that Moscow views it as a binding framework for mutual defense obligations.
“If necessary, we are ready to apply the full range of measures provided for under the treaty to ensure the security of our ally and, of course, the security of the Union State,” he added, without specifying what конкрет steps these measures could include.
