Oxford United are set to name Aaron Ramsey as their new head coach.The Athletic was told by sources with knowledge of the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, that Ramsey had meetings with senior figures at Oxford on Monday night, with an announcement expected later today (Tuesday).It will be the 35-year-old’s first permanent role as a head coach, after he retired from playing in April.Ramsey enjoyed an illustrious playing career, starting out at boyhood club Cardiff City, before spending 11 years at Arsenal, where he won three FA Cups.He later had spells at Juventus, OGC Nice and Pumas UNAM in Mexico, as well rejoining Cardiff for two years.Ramsey was capped 86 times by Wales, scoring 21 goals, and was an integral member of Chris Coleman’s side that reached the semi-final of the European Championship in 2016.Ramsey had a brief spell as interim manager of Cardiff, overseeing the team for the final three matches of the 2024-2025 season, but was unable to prevent them dropping out of the Championship.Ramsey won the FA Cup on three occasions with Arsenal (Ian Kington/AFP via Getty Images)His first match in charge was at home to Oxford, where a 35-yard Cameron Brannagan free kick rescued a point for the away side, steering them to safety at Cardiff’s expense.
