Electricity trader Discovery Green has signed a ten-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with forest-product company York Timber Holdings.
The deal will result in 90% of the energy consumed at the Jessievale sawmill in Mpumalanga being supplied by wheeled renewable electricity, and reduce the JSE-listed company’s carbon emissions.
York Timbers interim CEO Schalk Barnard said the PPA provided it with long-term cost certainty, while also positively impacting the company’s regulatory compliance.
He explained that clean energy was an important component in meeting the company’s commitment to internationally recognised standards, including the Forest Stewardship Council certification requirements and the International Finance Corporation's Performance Standards on Environmental and Social Sustainability.
“These standards help us maintain access to key markets, strengthen stakeholder confidence and support our broader sustainability objectives,” Barnard added.
