LOS ANGELES, June 23 (UPI) -- The Invite, in theaters Friday (June 26), is an intensely compressed chamber comedy in one apartment with four people. The sexual places it goes to will entice audiences, but director Olivia Wilde orchestrates a powderkeg even before it gets there.
Angela (Wilde) invites the upstairs neighbors for dinner to her husband, Joe's (Seth Rogen) surprise. Joe isn't ready for guests and Angela is frantically overpreparing, making things uncomfortably anxious too.
Hawk (Edward Norton) and Piña (Penelope Cruz) arrive and sense something is off. But, Angela insists they stay and the night proceeds.
Angela makes the entire night stressful by trying too hard, then stressing about failing to impress her guests. Joe's sarcasm only aggravates the tension. Even his more laid back attitude is dismissive of how important the dinner is to Angela.
