People relocating to Greece from abroad can benefit from additional tax exemptions on household goods and vehicles, potentially saving thousands of euros.The eligibility criteria, supporting documents and procedures that must be followed by individuals returning from abroad or choosing to settle permanently in Greece are set out in a circular issued by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE).The scheme provides exemptions from customs duties, VAT and vehicle registration tax on the import of household belongings, personal effects and even motor vehicles. The exemption covers furniture, electrical appliances, personal possessions, household equipment and private passenger vehicles that were owned and used by the individual at their previous place of residence.To qualify for the tax relief, applicants must prove that the vehicle and other goods formed part of their personal property. For this purpose, they are required to obtain a relocation certificate, issued in the applicant’s name, in order to complete the process.Who is eligible?The measure applies to individuals transferring their normal place of residence from abroad to Greece and is primarily aimed at facilitating their relocation and settlement in the country.A key requirement is that the applicant must have lived outside Greece for at least 24 consecutive months before transferring their residence. In addition, they must demonstrate that their actual and permanent residence was abroad and that they are now moving to Greece with the intention of residing there on a permanent basis.The right to claim the exemption is granted on an individual basis. In other words, each member of a family who meets the relevant conditions may independently be entitled to the tax relief.
