A separate $4.2 million is being negotiated with New Zealand as Manawanui compensation for Siumu residents, while the $10 million for Safata has been distributed to people's accounts.
The HMNZS Manawanui sank in October 2024, causing damage to the environment and the livelihoods of Safata residents. New Zealand gave $10 million for compensation last year.
Speaking in parliament, Minister for Environment, Ale Vena Ale, said the $10 million had now been settled, while recent assessments confirmed that the impact of the shipwreck extended beyond Safata and into parts of neighbouring Siumu.
Ale said inspections found that sections of Siumu were also affected by the disaster, leading to discussions over compensation for residents whose livelihoods were impacted.
He said agreements are currently being signed for affected residents and that approximately 4,200 people in Siumu have been identified as eligible beneficiaries. Ale added that negotiations are ongoing between the Samoan and New Zealand governments regarding a compensation package worth about $4.2 million for Siumu, separate from funds earmarked for Safata.
