Will Cathcart is to step down as head of WhatsApp after seven years, with parent company Meta replacing him with Kunal Shah, the founder of Indian fintech start-up Cred.

Cathcart is to continue working at Meta, but the company declined to specify what his role would be, other than that he would “build new products from the ground up”.

In a social media post, Cathcart wrote that WhatsApp was in “the strongest position it’s ever been”, which he felt was “the right moment to step back”.

Revenue opportunities

Under Cathcart, the messaging app has grown to have more than 3 billion monthly active users.
