ALBAWABA - An armed man opened fire on Monday at a Montreal hotel, killing a police officer before officers returned fire, killing him, police announced in a statement. A civilian also died, but it wasn’t immediately clear who fired that shot. Rabbi Michael Moshe Mizrahi was also identified as the third victim in the Montreal shooting.The police chief, Fady Dagher, announced that another cop was seriously injured in the shooting in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. He added that the second officer is in stable condition.Dagher further noted that the police received an emergency call about a person carrying a long gun at the Hilton hotel at around 11:35 a.m. He added this was the first time in 24 years that a Montreal police officer had been killed in the line of duty. "It’s a very, very sad day. It’s a nightmare," he told reporters. When policemen arrived at the scene, the suspect targeted them with gunfire. A clip was shared on social media showing the officers and the attacker, who was seen wearing an olive-colored jacket and cargo pants, trading fire, before an officer was injured as blood was seen on the floor.According to The Guardian, the shooting attack took place in a partly Jewish neighbourhood that includes kosher markets and restaurants.The police chief further noted that he didn't know who shot the civilian.The deceased officer was identified as Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, 34 and he had been working as a policeman since 2021.The videos online showed a civilian and at least one officer getting shot, while the person in the olive-colored clothing appeared to get shot while adjusting or reloading their gun, The Guardian said.The Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney, said he was "horrified" by the incident.
