Whispers an IGA store in Melbourne’s west was about to undergo a major makeover has turned into a reality, with the store to rebrand into billionaire Adrian Portelli’s first supermarket. The Melbourne entrepreneur confirmed the rumours in an Instagram post on Tuesday, sharing with his 1.3 million followers renovation works were about to commence. The IGA Deer Park store on Hatchlands Dr will be the LMCT+ brand’s first supermarket, and follows the success of its first petrol station in Preston which opened in April.Portelli has previously teased the location of his first supermarket to followers, giving them the hint it would be in Melbourne’s west where he grew up.There were suspicions the store would take over the Deer Park IGA, after social media sleuths identified the supermarket’s distinct wine barrels and black liquor store signage in one of Portelli’s earlier videos.Portelli verified these rumours in a series of vibrant photos which he posted to Instagram, revealing the large density of the store and it’s grand frontage which would soon feature his brand name.“Hello Deer Park! Works about to commence transforming this store into our very first LMCT+ supermarket and we couldn’t be more excited for this new journey together,” he said.“IGA do a great job so we hope we can live up to everyone’s expectations.”He then shared the post to his Instagram story with the caption “never forget where you come from”.Just like Portelli’s low-price petrol station, shopping at the LMCT+ supermarket comes with a catch. The businessman, who has an estimated net worth of around $1.4bn, told his followers earlier this year they would need to purchase the LMCT+ $99 membership, which will give shoppers access to both his store and petrol station. As for existing members, they would receive instant access to both as well as higher in-store discounts depending on their membership level.Small Australian businesses will also benefit from the store, with Portelli giving them the chance to put their products on his supermarket shelves.“It’s going to be an awesome platform for you guys because we’re going to give you the opportunity to get your product on the shelf,” he said. Local businesses were quick to jump onto Portelli’s post on Tuesday, recommending their services and products to be stocked on LMCT+ shelves.Western suburbs residents were also welcoming of the news, while those outside the region were keen to drive down once the store opened. The store will rival nearby Costco in Ardeer, which is less than 20 minutes away from the Deer Park site. Portelli grew up in the western suburb of St Albans, which is less than 10km from Deer Park. He is not new to the supermarket trade, having worked at Bi-Lo when he was a teenager. News.com.au has contacted Portelli for comment.Read related topics:Melbourne
