Sir, – I agree completely with Una Mullally regarding underground bins. (“Underground bins could solve Dublin’s waste problem,” June 22nd). I have seen them in several European cities and ordinary residents and businesses use them. However, she misses one important item and that is cost. Property charges in Europe generally pay for this service so no one can avoid paying. In Dublin 8 where I live, the on-street litter bins are constantly full to the brim with household waste. Until we have a system where everyone has to pay then underground bins won’t solve the problem. – Yours, etc, Shea Carroll,Emmet Road, Dublin 8
Why underground bins wouldn’t solve Dublin’s waste problem
We first need a system where everyone has to pay for bins
Underground bins function in European cities, but Dublin's core issue is the lack of mandatory payment system—unlike Europe, where property charges force universal participation. Without obligatory cost-sharing, infrastructure alone cannot alter dumping behavior that overwhelms existing street bins.
