The Echo Dot Max is a versatile jack-of-all-trades, functioning as a smart speaker, voice assistant, smart home controller, and mesh Wi-Fi extender. If you’re building a smart home from scratch, it’s a helpful device to simplify your setup, reducing the need to separate hubs and accessories. It includes everything you’d expect from an Echo device, including voice control, music streaming, weather updates, built-in motion and temperature sensing, and hands-free smart home management. It supports Alexa+, Amazon's own ChatGPT-esque chatbot (access is free for Prime members). The speaker delivers strong sound with a small footprint and supports Matter, Thread, and Zigbee devices. While it does offer more flexibility than similarly priced Bluetooth speakers, if your main goal is to upgrade your audio setup, there are stronger options on the market from brands like JBL. As is typical of many Amazon devices, much of the value of the Echo Dot Max comes through its integration with the rest of the Amazon ecosystem—but it's a capable AI-enabled smart speaker in its own right.
