Two popular tourist settlements in Halkidiki, frequently visited by Bulgarian holidaymakers, have been left without water supply amid high summer temperatures reaching around 35°C, local authorities said, BNT reported.
The disruption affected Nea Silata and Sozopoli, where water service was cut off since the morning due to damage at a pumping station. The municipality reported that the cause was the theft of electrical cables from the facility, which led to a shutdown of the water supply system in areas currently filled with tourists.
Repair crews were deployed immediately to restore operations at the pumping station. Officials said the damage to infrastructure was significant, but they expect water supply to be restored by the following morning at the latest.
Tourists in the affected areas have been forced to rely on bottled water for basic needs. At the same time, local businesses have been heavily impacted, with cafes and taverns suspending operations due to the lack of running water.
Local authorities have informed visitors about the cause of the disruption, while police have launched an investigation into the incident involving the cable theft and damage to the water network.
