When I Love Boosters arrived earlier this year, its marketing hinted there might be some wilder genre elements lurking beneath its candy-colored production design. And if you were lucky enough to catch the latest from Boots Riley on the big screen, you already know it takes a twist into surreal sci-fi at a certain point, not unlike Riley’s 2018 debut feature Sorry to Bother You and his 2023 Prime Video series I’m a Virgo.

No specific plot spoilers here, though. All you need to know going into I Love Boosters is the official synopsis (“A crew of professional shoplifters take aim at a cutthroat fashion maven. It’s like community service.”), and that you should just expect from the beginning that you have no idea where this ride is going to take you. The ideas come fast and furious, as do the dazzling visuals, and the anti-capitalist message is delivered with high energy and a fair amount of “Wait, WTF did I just witness?” moments. That last quality makes I Love Boosters‘ arrival on digital especially exciting, because now you have the power to rewind and instantly relive its funniest, freakiest moments. (If you’ve seen it, a certain unforgettable LaKeith Stanfield scene comes to mind.)
