A 52-year-old Staten Island man was arrested last month for an elaborate burglary at Chanel‘s East 57th Street store in New York City that amounted to an estimated $1.7 million loss in July 2024.Thomas Dono was arrested and charged with grand larceny in the first degree on May 19, according to a spokesperson for the New York City Police Department.Dono was allegedly part of an hours-long “coordinated and highly sophisticated burglary operation” that targeted Chanel’s boutique at 15 East 15th Street, according to information that was shared by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office.Media requests to Chanel were not returned Monday.Approximately 10 individuals were said to be seen on surveillance video footage arriving near the luxury store on July 13, 2024, at approximately 10:14 p.m. in two separate vehicles — a white sprinter van and a white minivan. Several individuals from the white sprinter van, who were dressed as construction workers, were said to have used that ruse to gain access to the alleyway and fire escape system located behind the store by entering an East 58th Street building nearby that was under construction.About an hour later, surveillance footage allegedly showed two individuals entered the store’s stockroom through a ceiling hatch door that was connected to the rear fire escape system. The pair allegedly took Chanel handbags and accessories and placed them in garbage bags and laundry-style bags, according to Bragg’s office. It was later estimated that nearly 300 items were removed, totaling a retail value of $1,776,700.
