The Kerala High Court closed a plea seeking approval of affiliation with the Bar Council of India (BCI) for Government Law College, Kozhikode, after noting that a provisional affiliation was obtained by the college on Monday (June 22).The writ petition was filed by an Idukki-based lawyer who discovered that his law degree was deemed ‘unqualified’ by the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), Canada, when he applied to pursue higher education and legal opportunities. He alleged that the BCI approval of the five-year BA LLB course at Government Law College, Kozhikode, had lapsed in 2011. The petitioner also sought retrospective recognition of the course from 2011 and validation of his law degree through regularisation. While disposing of the plea, Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas said that since the college had cleared all pending dues to the council and had complied with all the conditions concerning the mandatory standards of education, it had been granted provisional affiliation, and hence the petitioner’s grievance was addressed. The college was also directed to periodically maintain the standards of education as mandated by the Bar Council of India Rules of Legal Education, 2008.Further, the court said that the Principal of the college should initiate the process to obtain regular affiliation without any “undue delay”.
