England are back in action at the World Cup on Tuesday night against Ghana and Thomas Tuchel has some decisions to make. The Three Lions' stunning second-half comeback to beat Croatia 4-2 last week was an exhilarating start to the tournament. But it also left Tuchel with some selection headaches of the good kind.He has hailed the impact of his "finishers", after Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford, Djed Spence and Morgan Rogers all made a difference off the substitutes' bench. But did they do enough in Dallas to force themselves into the starting line-up in Boston?Saka gave England a timely boost by training on Monday, while Declan Rice is fully fit after being forced off against Croatia. Tuchel therefore has a full contingent to pick from and some tough calls to make.‌Rashford or Anthony Gordon? Saka or Noni Madueke? Should Marc Guehi come into the side after a shaky defensive display in the first half on Thursday? Here is what Mirror Football's writers would do.Get the latest World Cup 2026 news in your inbox with our Make Football Great Again newsletterAndy DunnHere’s a spot of England trivia for you. Marcus Rashford has won 73 caps. In winning those 73 caps, how many times has he completed a full match for his country?‌Eleven, that is all. Eleven. Forty-one of his England appearances came when he entered the match as a substitute. In just over 10 years, he has started 32 times and has been substituted in 21 of those matches. In short, he never really had Gareth Southgate's full confidence. Thomas Tuchel might well be more of a fan but still preferred Anthony Gordon in his first starting line-up of the World Cup. But Gordon did not do enough to stay ahead of Rashford - and Rashford did enough to start ahead of Gordon. Rashford looks like a coiled spring, ready to release the frustration of the slightly unfathomable Barcelona snub.HAVE YOUR SAY! Who would you pick vs Ghana? Comment below.‌Nico O’Reilly popped up in threatening positions against Croatia and should start again, but he needs athletic, reliable cover when defending. For that reason, Marc Guehi should be preferred to John Stones. As the tournament goes on, England need Bukayo Saka in the eleven, but fitness reservations mean the safest thing is to use him from the bench in these group stages. My XI: Pickford; James, Konsa, Guehi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane.Ryan TaylorThomas Tuchel has a selection headache following a statement second half performance from England against Croatia. I would not be surprised to see him name the same starting XI before entrusting the same 'finishers' to come on and see the job through.‌However, I think he must start Marcus Rashford, who was way more effective than Anthony Gordon. Gordon is a decent player - he would not have earned a big-money transfer to Barcelona otherwise - but he really does blow hot and cold. Rashford would be my starting left-winger from here on in.In defence, Marc Guehi has to come in and I would drop Ezri Konsa. It's harsh perhaps but if you're going to take John Stones, there is no point in giving up on him after one game. Guehi could switch to the left-sided centre-back role and Stones could shuffle across.Outside of that, I wouldn't make any more changes for now. It's too early to risk Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke excelled against Croatia, even though he's not everyone's cup of tea. If England win this game, Panama is where you can afford to make wholesale changes and assess other players.‌My XI: Pickford; James, Stones, Guehi, O'Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Rashford; Kane.John CrossMy hunch would be that Thomas Tuchel will stick with a winning formula. In the second half against Croatia, England played as well as any team that I have seen in this tournament to date. So, why on earth change it? Personally, I would like to see Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Marc Guehi start in the England line-up. But one thing is for certain, there is simply no way that England will be able to go unchanged through the whole tournament. However, Noni Madueke did well in that first game. Anthony Gordon is better defensively. And Ezri Konsa is a real Tuchel favourite. But Guehi is composed on the ball, reads the game well and also would be a good combination with John Stones.‌Marcus Rashford is quicker, more aggressive and, in the bigger games, but the Tuchel “finishers” plan - with players coming on to win games - was so effective against Croatia.Rashford and Saka from the bench would be more effective than Madueke and Gordon. Sadly, that may mean they have to wait their turn. Saka would definitely start as the tournament wears on because he is a big game player who is so important for England. But this England team looks pretty settled already - and that is a good place to be.My XI: Pickford; James, Konsa, Stones, O’Reilly; Rice, Anderson; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.‌Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
