A visually challenged Visakhapatnam-based architect, and researcher has been honoured with the national-level Rare Star Award 2026 in the category of Role Model Living with a Rare Disease (16-30 years). Balajepalli Kavya Poornima was also presented with NIDHI cash prize at an award ceremony held in Bengaluru recently.The jury of the Organisation for Rare Diseases India (ORDI) selected Ms. Poornima from nationwide nominations. Despite losing her vision in 2017 due to Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), she rebuilt her life to champion inclusive design, universal accessibility, and environmental conservation.Through her initiative, Poornamidam, she drives research and advocacy at the intersection of art, architecture, and disability, while also supporting patients via IIH Warriors India.She currently serves as a member of the Visakhapatnam District Disability Committee.
