An aerial view of the Cape Flats. This Father’s Day, Faiez Jacobs honours the fathers and caregivers who embody resilience and strength in our communities, while exploring the journey from surviving to thriving on the Cape Flats.

Happy Father’s Day to the men who are present, consistent and showing up.

We celebrate the fathers who are working, healing, learning, protecting, providing and trying even when they do not always get it right. We also honour the many women, grandmothers, aunties and single mothers who have carried both the mothering and the fathering of our families and communities.

We see you. We honour you. We celebrate you.

On Father’s Day, I video-called my high school buddy, Leander Peters, who now lives in Canada. It was supposed to be a quick check-in. But you know how these conversations go. One “Do you remember?” became another, and before long we were back in 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989.
