Bengaluru: The BJP MLAs who cross-voted for Congress in the June 18 Legislative Council votes did so for money, Opposition leader R Ashoka said on Monday, ahead of a scheduled meeting with party national president Nitin Nabin in Delhi on Tuesday.BJP state unit president BY Vijayendra and Ashoka are meeting Nabin on Tuesday to explain the crossvoting by a few party MLAs in favour of Congress candidates.“No one would cross-vote for free. They accepted money (from the Congress) and did so. I heard someone say these people accepted money for development. Whose development? Their own,” the Opposition leader told the media. On Sunday, Vijayendra also felt that no one would vote for a rival party's candidate for free, while saying that the shady development lowered the party MLAs' image in the eyes of workers and forced them to view each of the 63 BJP MLAs with suspicion.Ashoka said the party has some clues about who defied party discipline but is awaiting confirmation. The three-member committee investigating the cross-voting will submit its report in a day or two to the national leadership, he said, adding, “We will crush these thieves.”Meanwhile, opposition is growing within the BJP against the state president’s idea to arrange a ‘truth test’ by the party MLAs at Dharmashtala as part of the party’s exercise to identify the MLAs who betrayed the party.Union minister Pralhad Joshi has joined senior MLA S Suresh Kumar, urging Vijayendra to drop the idea of holding the legislature party meeting in Dharmasthala. Sections of MLAs too are said to have conveyed the same opinion to Vijayendra. The BJP state president considered seeking divine intervention because people strongly believe that the presiding deity, Lord Manjunatha, upholds truth, and one cannot utter a lie at the temple without consequence. The BJP is trying to determine the number of MLAs who cross voted, and identify them, but some within the party believe the committee will struggle to establish its assessment because the MLC polls used a secret ballot. The committee consisting of MLC CT Ravi, BJP State Vice President N Mahesh (Kollegal) and Hubli-Dharwad Central MLA Mahesh Tenginkai are talking to sections of MLAs to gather clues and submit its report. In the Council polls for seven seats from the assembly, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emerged stronger as the Congress won all five seats it fielded candidates for. This was also a major political test for Shivakumar after he took over as CM early this month.
Council Polls: MLAs cross voted for money, says Karnataka Opposition leader Ashoka ahead of meeting with Nabin on Tuesday
BJP leaders suspect cross-voting in Legislative Council polls was driven by monetary gain, with investigations underway to identify the MLAs involved. Opposition leader R Ashoka stated that no one would betray the party without accepting money. Meanwhile, a proposal for a 'truth test' at Dharmasthala has faced internal opposition, with concerns about the secret ballot making identification difficult.
