Keir Starmer has resigned as Labour leader and set out the timetable for the country’s next prime minister starting with nominations on 9 July.

Unable to hide his emotions any longer as he paid tribute to his wife and children and called becoming prime minister the “proudest moment” of his life.

One of the key challengers, Wes Streeting, said he will not stand for the leadership and is backing Andy Burnham who is heading to London to be sworn in as an MP, and has confirmed he is putting himself forward for leader.
