In England and Wales 42 per cent of marriages end in divorce and in 2023 alone there were 102,678 divorces granted. The most common reason for couples ending their commitment is infidelity, with a third (33.4 per cent) of people citing it as the main factor in ending their marriage, according to data published last year.

We asked some of these divorcées, whose marriages ended for various reasons, what advice they’d give to married couples – whether they’re in the honeymoon phase, a long-term relationship or having marital issues.

Keep your sense of self

Katie Stratford*, a 55-year-old mother of two, says “keeping your sense of self is incredibly important”. She got divorced from her husband in 2019 after nearly two decades together and 15 years of marriage. She believes this was because they’d lost themselves in the relationship; their identities became lost when parenting their two daughters.
