Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party, following what he described as the conclusion of internal discussions within his parliamentary party about his suitability to lead the party into the next general election.

He said he would step down after accepting the outcome of those conversations, stressing that he respected the decision made about his leadership. “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace,” he said, adding that his decision was guided by what he believes is in the country’s interest.

Starmer confirmed he had already informed the King of his resignation earlier in the day. He described the process as quick but emotionally difficult, as he prepares to leave office after what he called a period defined by national responsibility and political change.
