A South Korean court has sentenced Park Sung-jae, the minister of justice at the time of the 2024 insurrection, to 25 years behind bars for playing a key supporting role in the martial law plot by then-President Yoon Suk-yeol. Park was immediately remanded into custody after the court determined that there was a risk he might destroy evidence. The Seoul Central District Court handed Park his sentence on Monday afternoon, finding him guilty of playing a key role in service of an insurrection. The court ruled that Park had ordered travel bans to be placed on those who violated the martial law proclamation, secured space for detaining people at correctional facilities, and ordered the dispatch of personnel to a joint investigation headquarters to be set up under the martial law command. In doing so, the court found that Park had been aware that such actions were illegal in nature and carried out “for the purpose of subverting the Constitution.” By Oh Yeon-seo, staff reporter; Lee Na-young, staff reporterPlease direct questions or comments to [english@hani.co.kr]
