Lithuania's President Gitanas Nausėda has said the next rotation of American troops to the country could exceed previous deployments, with a formal decision expected shortly.

Nausėda said information from Washington suggested the outcome would be more favourable than anticipated, though it was still in the final stages of approval.

The comments come after more than a thousand US soldiers completed their rotation in Lithuania this summer, leaving a temporary gap in American military presence as Washington conducts a broader review of its force posture in Europe.

The United States has maintained a regular troop presence in Lithuania since 2019, with deployments shifting to a continuous rotational basis following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Rotations have typically involved around 1,000 or more soldiers with combat equipment. Lithuania has said it is prepared to host up to 1,500 US personnel.
