In an interview with “The Axios Show,” Trump said he may have viewed Anthropic, or CEO Dario Amodei, as a national security threat last week, but not anymore. “Well, not now, but a week ago, maybe,” Trump said.
The dispute centered on export controls and access to powerful AI models, an area that has become a growing focus for Washington as AI tools become more important to national security, cyber defense, and critical infrastructure. Anthropic responded by disabling access to the models for all users after the order, rather than only blocking foreign nationals.
Anthropic Moves Quickly to Ease Tensions
Trump said Amodei responded to the administration’s directive “very quickly” and “responsibly.” Senior Anthropic technical staff were also expected to meet with Trump administration officials this week to work through the dispute.
Anthropic struck a cooperative tone in response. A company spokesperson said it was “grateful to the administration for their ongoing partnership” and remained committed to working with officials to protect critical infrastructure and keep the U.S. ahead in AI.
