Alan Shearer is providing commentary for select BBC 2026 World Cup matches, but not everyone is in favour of the Newcastle United legend18:00, 21 Jun 2026Alan Shearer jokingly told a football fan they were talking "bull****" after having his punditry skills questioned at the 2026 World Cup. The Newcastle United icon is currently soaking up the summer in North America, offering commentary on select matches at world football's biggest tournament.Shearer was behind the microphone for England's opening fixture against Croatia alongside Lee Dixon, delivering his verdict as the Three Lions emerged 4-2 victors in the Group L encounter. And after unveiling his 'Hot Take Hotline' in partnership with Betfair – for whom he is an ambassador – Shearer found himself in the firing line from one particular football supporter. The caller said: "Hi Shearer, I was unfortunately watching the England match last night and I have to say that, that Lee Dixon is some co-commentator, you know? First, he's an Arsenal legend and second, he's a legend of the commentating game as well. You should really up your game."Never one to mince his words, the 55-year-old hit back, with tongue firmly in cheek: "Haha, that is fair enough. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. It's not my fault you talk bull****."Meanwhile, Shearer also slammed FIFA's decision to introduce hydration breaks for the 2026 World Cup. Another caller said: "These new hydration breaks are ridiculous. They totally break the rhythm of the game."JOIN US ON FACEBOOK! For players' safety, when it's too hot, yes, absolutely have a hydration break. But, for example, England's game was air conditioned - 21 degrees."Perfect temperature with a roof over. So, there is absolutely no need for players' welfare to have a hydration break. We all know what they're for."We all know why they have brought them in. And the vast majority of time, unfortunately, it's not for player welfare. It's for adverts."Content cannot be displayed without consentThe hydration breaks at this year's tournament, which typically occur around the 25- and 75-minute marks, have been greeted with a decidedly hostile reaction from supporters inside the stadiums.Lasting a matter of minutes on each occasion, loud choruses of boos have rung out as players have trudged back to the touchline while a selected track has been played over the speakers. You can leave your message for Alan Shearer by calling the Hot Take Hotline on 0800-707-4073.Get the latest World Cup news straight to your inbox by signing up to our Make Football Great Again newsletter now!Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
