Actor Swetha Menon, the first woman president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), and the association’s 17-member executive committee resigned on Sunday following weeks of internal disputes and controversies.Announcing the decision after AMMA’s annual general body meeting in Kochi, Swetha Menon told reporters that there had been attempts by certain individuals to “hijack” the organisation. “I cannot remain a puppet,” she told reporters after her resignation from the association’s leadership. The executive committee, led by Swetha Menon, assumed office in August last year after the previous committee headed by Mohanlal stepped down in 2024 amid controversies surrounding the release of the Justice Hema Committee report on the treatment of women in the Malayalam film industry.Earlier in the day, a section of members submitted a no-confidence letter against the executive committee. The AGM also witnessed heated exchanges, with some members raising concerns over alleged discrepancies in the annual report and financial statements presented by the general secretary. The association has recently been embroiled in multiple controversies involving its members. Actor Ansiba Hassan, who resigned as joint secretary, and vice-president Lakshmipriya filed complaints against each other. Treasurer Unni Sivapal was placed on compulsory leave following a police complaint lodged by an employee of the association.Ansiba Hassan also filed a police complaint against actor Tini Tom, alleging defamatory and communal remarks. Executive committee member Neena Kurup separately complained to the AMMA leadership, accusing Tini Tom of using abusive language and attempting physical assault. Those who resigned along with Swetha Menon include general secretary Kukku Parameswaran; vice-presidents Jayan R and Lakshmipriya; treasurer Unni Sivapal; and executive committee members Sarayu Mohan, Anjali Nair, Asha Aravind, Neena Kurup, Santhosh Keezhattur, Vinu Mohan, Kailash, Tini Tom, Joy Mathew, Rony David Raj and Sijoy Varghese.Published on June 21, 2026
