Parliament president faces calls for disciplinary measure

Renew has urged European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to investigate and potentially sanction two members of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group following allegations of racist remarks and online harassment.

The accusation stems from last week’s plenary vote on returns, after which several far-right MEPs were reportedly recorded chanting “send them back” in the hemicycle. Tensions further escalated on social media.

One comment, by Danish ECR MEP Kristoffer Storm, sparked particular controversy. In response to a social media video in which Iraqi-born Swedish Renew MEP Abir Al-Sahlani said she had “never felt so unsafe in this Parliament,” Storm commented: “Abir Al-Sahlani should go home.”

On his profile, Finnish ECR MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen also reacted to Al-Sahlani’s remarks, writing “cry more.”
