Egyptian forces arrested several hundred Sudanese accused of illegally entering the country to prospect for gold.
Officials say up to 50,000 Sudanese, including smuggling gangs, have searched for gold using crude tools in the area.
The operation began on Tuesday and continues, with troops combing terrain; about 500 arrests and dozens of deportations to Sudan were reported.
Sudanese social media users allege activity in Sudan’s Red Sea region and call for an international inquiry into casualties, amid silence from both militaries.
