Tunisia make an early exit from the tournament ReutersFollowing their 5-1 thrashing by Sweden, Sabri Lamouchi was sacked by Tunisia, making the 54-year-old the first manager to be removed from position after one game during a World Cup.The former Nottingham Forest boss was swiftly replaced by Herve Renard, who managed Saudi Arabia at the previous World Cup and beat eventual winners Argentina in the nation’s first group game in 2022. However, Renard was unable to make an immediate impact, losing 4-0 to Japan, with Tunisia now eliminated from the tournament. They’ve endured a very miserable World Cup campaign. Ecuador have failed to deliver at this World Cup ReutersAfter finishing second in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualification group, ahead of the likes of Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay, Ecuador would have been feeling confident heading into the tournament. However, the competition has not panned out as fans would have hoped. Sebastian Beccacece’s side conceded late against Ivory Coast and lost their opening game 1-0, before last night’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Curacao. It leaves Ecuador with just one point from two games and zero goals scored. Their final outing of the group stage is a tough test against table-toppers Germany, making their chance of reaching the knockouts very slim. Pedro Vite’s dejected facial expression sums up how everyone associated with Ecuador currently feels.Japan easily brush Tunisia aside Getty ImagesJapan leapfrogged Sweden in Group F and now look very well-placed to advance into the World Cup knockouts after a comfortable 4-0 win against Tunisia, who are unable to progress out of the group after two dismal defeats. These supporters watched the game at a public viewing, hosted by Tokyo's Haneda Airport. In 2005, the Japan Football Association revealed their plan to win the World Cup by 2050. One fan clearly fancies their chances this year.Germany leave it late to dramatically beat Ivory Coast ReutersFranck Kessie's 30th-minute goal had propelled the Ivory Coast into the lead, before a Germany fightback, spearheaded by second-half substitute Deniz Undav, allowed the 2014 winners to claim a last-gasp 2-1 victory in Toronto.Undav netted in the 68th and 94th minutes, with his strikes ensuring that Julian Nagelsmann’s side will advance into the last 32 of the tournament. Curacao secure historic point against Ecuador ReutersIt’s a game that Curacao will never forget. The Caribbean island will forever remember it as the day they won their first-ever point at a World Cup.Despite Ecuador’s 75% possession and 27 shots, they couldn’t find a way past Curacao’s impenetrable goalkeeper, Eloy Room. The 37-year-old produced an inspired display, enabling Curacao to create history after last week’s defeat to Germany. Netherlands smash Sweden Getty ImagesRonald Koeman’s side were in a rampant mood yesterday, thumping Sweden 5-1 in Houston to overtake Graham Potter’s men and move up to first place in the group. Braces from Brain Brobbey and Cody Gakpo, as well as a sweet strike from Crysencio Summerville, sealed the Netherlands’ win, while Anthony Elanga netted Sweden’s only goal in the second half. The Netherlands’ final group match will be against Tunisia, who have suffered comprehensive four-goal defeats to both Sweden and Japan in their previous outings. After twice throwing the lead away against Japan and drawing 2-2 in their opening game of the World Cup, the Dutch fans were soaking up the glory of this emphatic victory. Day 10 recapIt was an action-packed schedule of drama on Day 10 of the 2026 World Cup, with all eight teams in Groups E and F taking to the field. In Group E, Germany recorded a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Ivory Coast thanks to Deniz Undav’s double, before Curacao won their first-ever point at a World Cup after securing a 0-0 draw with Ecuador, who remain winless in this year’s tournament without scoring.Meanwhile, in Group E, the Netherlands and Japan both registered heavy wins against Sweden and Tunisia, triumphing 5-1 and 4-0, respectively. After a 5-1 demolition of Sweden — the same Sweden who put five past Tunisia a week ago — everybody is. Cody Gakpo was irresistible, Brian Brobbey bullied his way to two goals inside 17 minutes and Crysencio Summerville added a fifth for good measure. One performance does not make a World Cup winner, and the Dutch still left gaps in behind that better sides will fancy. But Ronald Koeman's side have served notice: ignore them at your peril.Ecuador, Curacao go at it GettyEcuador, beaten 1-0 by Ivory Coast in their opener, can put themselves in a strong position in Group E with a win here. For Curacao, who shipped seven against Germany earlier in the tournament, defeat would leave them with virtually no path through — and they know it.Follow our live coverage here.Relief in Berlin GettyNever in doubt — though the hearts were pounding. A French TV presenter called it "disgusting"; former boxer Brahim Asloum replied: "A baby is your entire life. A World Cup is over when it is over." For the record: Coman did it twice for France, Foden did it at Euro 2024, and Shohei Ohtani took paternity leave from the Dodgers just this week.Saudi Arabia fans making their presence felt in Atlanta. She's taking credit if they win.Lynne Brown, 68, of Overland Park, Kansas, listed a pool table on Facebook Marketplace in early June. England's volunteer logistics team came knocking, showed up with a big truck and five or six "big dudes," and hauled it out of her basement for $700. Her husband wanted World Cup tickets instead. She talked him out of it. "If they win the World Cup," she says, "I'm totally taking credit." England beat Croatia 4-2 a few days later.Austin Green has the full story on England's secret weapon. What's not usual is the situation the USMNT find themselves in. With one game remaining in group play, the U.S. have clinched the top spot in Group D thanks to 10-man Paraguay's shocking win over Turkey last night, rendering Wednesday's game against Turkey meaningless from a tournament perspective. Mauricio Pochettino is not confirming how, or even if, he'll change the starting XI for that game this far out. But between Christian Pulisic still dealing with a calf injury and four other key players — Antonee Robinson, Folarin Balogun, Tyler Adams and Chris Richards — all on yellow cards, all signs point to some heavy rotations in the lineup for the USMNT's group-stage finale on Wednesday.I'm currently at a coffee shop in Irvine, a five-minute drive from the USMNT training ground, where one diner is chatting with another about the World Cup at the table next to me. The person listening is astonished to learn that the U.S. are training just down the road. Other topics of conversation include Iran moving their training camp to Tijuana and ongoing visa issues, and Germany 7-1 Curacao. (I don't think either are aware that Germany are playing Ivory Coast as they speak.) GettyEngland players Harry Kane, Jason Steele and a cowboy-booted Dan Burn went to see country music sensation Ella Langley just outside Kansas City on Friday night. Kane and Burn are both big country music fans, with the England captain often playing country music records at the team base here. They had hoped to see Langley when she played in West Palm Beach when England were there earlier this month. But on Friday she played in Independence, Missouri, on the eastern outskirts of Kansas City, and so three players went to watch. Kane and Steele left sufficiently early to meet Langley before the show. Burn - who revealed all at a press conference this afternoon - did not make it in time for a meeting but did get dressed up especially, wearing his cowboy hat and boots. All three players left before the end of Langley’s show so they could get back in time for the England squad curfew.
