Pope Leo XIV has hailed the first American saint as well as her care for migrants in need during a trip to Italy - after swiping at Donald Trump over the Iran war. The Pontiff praised Mother Frances Cabrini as he visited her birthplace in Sant Angelo Lodigiano, near Milan, on Saturday. Leo, who previously clashed with the Trump administration over its migrant crackdown, urged young people to learn about Cabrini's life and service. Cabrini is the patron saint of migrants, and is well known among many Americans for her work caring for Italian immigrants in the US at the end of the last century. However, her work extended beyond the US, as she extended her support across schools, hospitals and orphanages across the globe. After she died in 1917, as a naturalized US citizen in Leo's native Chicago, Cabrini was blessed by the Catholic Church and canonized in 1946 as the first American saint. In praising Cabrini, Leo said that her faith inspired her to help those who had left everything behind in a bid to create a better life.'What could be more relevant today than a missionary charism dedicated to serving migrants?' he said.'Let us ask ourselves: if Mother Francesca were alive today, what would her missionary spirit tell her?' Leo said. 'And what would a pope like Francis - who, as the son of Italian immigrants, made service to migrants one of the key priorities of his pontificate - ask of her?'His latest comments come after the Pope called for 'deep reflection' on how migrants were being treated under the Trump administration last November. Pope Leo XIV has hailed the first American saint, Mother Frances Cabrini, as well as her care for migrants in need during his visit to Italy after swiping at Donald Trump over the Iran war Donald Trump previously launched a scathing attack on Pope Leo after the Pontiff criticised remarks he made about the Iran war where he said 'a whole civilisation will die'At the time, he said: 'Jesus says very clearly at the end of the world, we're going to be asked, you know, how did you receive the foreigner? 'Did you receive him and welcome him or not? And I think that there's a deep reflection that needs to be made in terms of what's happening.'Many people who've lived for years and years and years, never causing problems, have been deeply affected by what's going on right now,' he added. In February, the Pontiff also criticised world leaders who spent billions on wars as the world was 'being ravaged by tyrants' during a visit to Cameroon. The Pope took a swipe at those he said were manipulating the 'name of God' for their own gain' while travelling the African region, impacted by several violent conflicts. His comments came days after Trump launched a lengthy attack against the Pope after Leo raised concerns over the US President's remarks. At the time, Trump said 'a whole civilisation will die' if Iran did not agree to US demands over bringing the war to an end and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. In a Truth Social post, the US President said: 'Leo should get his act together as Pope.'Today, the Pontiff prayed before Cabrini's tomb in a basilica, named after her, located in her birthplace in northern Italy, and presided over an evening prayer service. The visit to northern Italy is part of Leo's summertime grand tour of Italy to visit key cities to get to know his flock. It comes as Leo has embraced the Catholic Church's gospel-mandated call to 'welcome the stranger' in his ministry to migrants. Last week Pope Leo spent two days in Spain's Canary Islands, a major destination for migrants leaving West Africa. He called for welcoming and integrating those fleeing hardship and conflict. The Pontiff's next day trip to Italy is scheduled for July 4, where he is set to travel to the Sicilian Island of Lampedusa, a major destination for migrants fleeing North Africa.
