Such security is well-earned for Gillespie, who signed three two-way contracts between stints with the Suns and Denver Nuggets before becoming a key piece of Phoenix’s long-term future.In 80 regular-season games, he averaged 12.7 points as a third-year pro after posting a scoring average of 4.9 in his first 57 appearances. The 26-year-old averaged 10.5 points in Phoenix’s first-round series against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder, which ended in a Thunder sweep.Gillespie’s value grew when Phoenix needed him in the starting lineup. In 58 regular-season starts, he scored 13.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists. Overall, he proved to be a consistent positive for the Suns, who saw a net-rating swing of 5.9 points per 100 possessions based on Gillespie’s presence.
