The World Cup is giving clubs around the world opportunity to watch potential transfer targets at close quarters and it appears that Liverpool are among the sides to be taking a look at the tournament for potential additions21:52, 20 Jun 2026Liverpool have ‘sent scouts’ to the World Cup to watch Barcelona-linked Lucas Herrington. The Colorado Rapids centre-back, just 18, has been earning admiring glances in Europe this season for his performances in MLS following his arrival from Brisbane Roar.‌His displays were good enough to earn a spot in Australia’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. And it appears that those interested in him have travelled to the USA, Canada and Mexico to get a closer look.‌According to Metro, Liverpool have sent scouts over the pond to watch him, having also kept close tabs on him earlier this season. The Reds however face serious competition for Herrington.‌According to The Athletic, Spanish giants Barcelona are also interested and have apparently had an opening bid turned down by Colorado.Speaking recently about his future, Herrington said: “I just want to keep enjoying it, taking it day by day. I’m not really thinking too far in the future. It’s just Colorado, and now just focusing on the World Cup.“That’s where my focus is at the moment; we’ll see what happens after that. But loving my football in Colorado, and we’ll see what happens.‌“It’s the people in my circle, they keep me grounded and keep me humble. They tell me just to focus, take it day by day. They’ll sort everything else out.“Just me, focus on the field, and just play the best I can every week, and that’s just sort of what I keep doing, just taking it week by week, and just game by game.”‌Meanwhile, those who watch the youngster in action in the US have been full of praise. Rapids president Padraig Smith said earlier this year: “He is an exceptionally talented young man with the world at his feet.“When our scouts identified him, and we began the recruitment process, we knew he had a high ceiling.”Ex-Arsenal defender Rob Holding has also offered his take and said: “He’s super composed, super relaxed, on the ball, under pressure. He’s a really good player. He just keeps getting better and better each week.”Article continues belowHerrington could make his World Cup debut next week with Australia set to take on Paraguay. Victory would secure them a spot in the last 32 of the tournament but anything less could leave them with a nervous wait.Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
