Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz after claiming Israeli strikes on Lebanon have violated the peace agreement brokered by the US.
According to the Iranian military, the key waterway – which is vital for oil shipments – would be shut off to vessels after a breach of the ceasefire agreement.
Iranian state media has reported Tehran’s military command as warning that the closure is the “first step” in their response to “ceasefire violation” and that further action would be taken if “aggression” continued.
At least 16 people were killed by Israeli airstrikes on southern Lebanon, which targeted the Nabatieh district and Saida mere hours after the agreement came into effect.
The peace deal, which was signed by Donald Trump whilst attending the G7 summit earlier this week, noted that the US, Iran and allies would declare an “immediate and permanent” termination of military operations on “all fronts”. This included Lebanon.
