SEATTLE — The United States secured a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage despite the absence of injured star Christian Pulisic, defeating Australia 2-0 on Friday before clinching top spot in Group D.The Americans advanced to the round of 32 after recording their second consecutive victory of the tournament, while Paraguay's 1-0 win over Turkey later ensured the United States finished first in the group. The Group D winners will now play a third-placed team in the round of 32 on July 1 in Santa Clara, California.Pulisic, who missed the match with a calf injury, watched as his teammates continued their impressive start to the tournament without the AC Milan forward."C.P. is a fantastic player — the quality and leadership that he gives us," Folarin Balogun said. "We didn't have him today, but I think you saw we're still capable to go out there and get a result and put up a performance."The United States took the lead in the 11th minute when Balogun's run down the left flank forced Australia defender Cameron Burgess into turning the ball into his own net while attempting to intercept a cross intended for Ricardo Pepi.Alex Freeman doubled the advantage in the 43rd minute, heading home after Sergiño Dest's effort was deflected into his path. The goal was confirmed following a video review and marked the 21-year-old's first World Cup goal."(He) is doing a fantastic job," coach Mauricio Pochettino said of Freeman. "The evolution is massive. He's so humble. He wants to learn. He always listens."The Americans controlled the opening half and limited Australia's attacking opportunities throughout the match."It did not surprise us because their quality is clear," Australia coach Tony Popovic said. "Their power is clear. Their athleticism is clear."The victory marked the first time the United States has won consecutive World Cup matches since the inaugural tournament in 1930. The team has scored six goals in two games, one shy of its all-time scoring record at a single World Cup.Pochettino said the strong start should not alter expectations but acknowledged that confidence is growing within the squad."I think it's much better when you show good performances and win the games," he said. "But at the same time, it's important to keep believing."The performance also demonstrated the depth available to the Americans while Pulisic recovers."We know how vital Christian is to the team," Freeman said. "For us it was Ricardo Pepi who came in and had an amazing game. I think that just shows how good our roster is."With maximum points from two matches and first place in the group secured, the United States now turns its attention to the knockout stage as hopes continue to grow of a deep run on home soil.
