A doctoral researcher in Cell and Molecular Biology at the University of Houston in the United States, Mary Adesina, has called for significant investment in genomics research in Africa to tackle cancer.

She urged the Federal Government to expand scholarships, fellowships and research grants, providing Nigerian scientists with access to world-class training and research opportunities.

Adesina stated that the World Health Organisation disclosed that cancer caused nearly 10 million deaths worldwide in 2022, making it one of the leading causes of death globally.

The scientist made this known in a statement made available to Diaspora Tales during the week.

“In Africa, the cancer burden is expected to rise significantly over the coming decades due to population growth, aging populations and changing lifestyles,” Adesina said.
