At least one person is dead and 89 are injured after two passenger trains collided in horrific scenes near Bedford, northwest of London. The crash happened around 5.12pm on Friday local time between two southbound East Midlands Railway passenger trains, with one train rear-ending the other. One person has died and a total of 89 people have been injured, including 11 with “very serious injuries”, 22 seriously injured and 56 with minor injuries, according to the East of England Ambulance Service. “We left Bedford station and there was a massive bang … I didn’t know what was going on; my head hit the seat in front of me,” commuter Teresa Itabor told the BBC. “I opened my eyes and that’s when I saw people on the floor with blood everywhere.”“I’m ok with bloody legs and back impact. Others are not good,” another commuter, Dr Pete Knapp, wrote on social media. “Sudden crash, no slowing down or horns. No warning. No explosion, just stopped instantly.” British Transport Police said officers were responding. “We know that a number of people have been injured and one person has very sadly died,” a spokesperson said.“A major incident has been declared, and officers are continuing to respond at the scene alongside colleagues from Bedfordshire Police and the local Fire and Rescue and Ambulance Services.”UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his thoughts were with the family of the person who had died.“Hugely concerning reports of a collision involving two passenger trains near Bedford,” Mr Starmer wrote on X.“First and foremost, my thoughts are with the family of the person who has sadly lost their life, and with those who have been seriously injured.“I am grateful to the emergency services for their swift response to this tragic incident.”More to come.
