Neymar was a divisive pick in the first place. When Ancelotti did name him in his 26-man squad, many in Brazil felt that he was going against his own, repeated insistence that he would only select players who were 100 per cent fit.He had mostly said that about Neymar himself. And while the forward did, in fairness, put together a run of games in April and May, he was carrying a calf injury when he arrived at Brazil’s training camp. The issue turned out to be more significant than the Brazil hierarchy had assumed, but they decided to let the situation play out. Neymar missing the pre-tournament friendlies was not ideal but not a huge deal either. The first game against Morocco … well, that felt like a line. Now that he looks set to miss the Haiti game as well, Ancelotti is going to come under a huge amount of scrutiny. If Brazil’s World Cup is anything less than a success from this point, Neymar-gate is going to dominate the post-mortem and rightly so.Early team news: Neymar trains — but Haiti is too soon Getty ImagesThe Neymar questions aren't going away — and Carlo Ancelotti is making clear how he intends to handle them. Pressed yet again on the attacker's situation, the head coach bristled, insisting he “owes nobody anything” when it comes to selection. The message was unmistakable: Neymar, like everyone else, will play on merit and fitness, not reputation. With the Santos attacker still working his way back and unable to face Haiti, Ancelotti is quietly signalling that sentiment won't pick his team — not even for a national icon.Playing host today... Getty ImagesLincoln Financial FieldWhat is there to know about Philadelphia? Well, our man Brooks Peck gave us the lowdown in a piece from 2022:✍️ “Once the nation’s capital, Philly is rich with history and arguably the most passionate sports fans in the country. “The city has regularly hosted massive events and its geographical location (40 million people are within 150 miles of the city — the most of any in the U.S.) is relatively close to fellow hosts Toronto, NY/NJ and Boston, creating a nice hub for teams and fans.“Lincoln Financial Field is home to the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles, but its first event upon opening in 2003 was a friendly between Manchester United and Barcelona, so soccer is very much a part of its history.”Subscribe to The Athletic The AthleticThere is no better time to be a subscriber to The Athletic for all the sporting insight, analysis and live coverage you need during the World Cup and beyond. As well as the ongoing tournament in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, you can get your soccer fix with us for the rest of the year with our Champions League and Premier League coverage as well as Europe’s top leagues.Meanwhile, the Formula 1 season is in full swing, plus we have golf, tennis and more on the cards.Subscribe to The Athletic on an exclusive offer here. How to watch: Brazil vs Haiti Getty ImagesFancy tuning in to the action live on TV (alongside our live coverage here, of course)?
