The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a disproportionate assets case against N. Rengaraj, a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, who retired as Chief Commissioner of Income Tax.The allegation is that when Rengaraj was the Principle Commissioner of Income Tax, Coimbatore, in 2020-24, he amassed assets more than his known sources of income.The FIR stated that during that period, Mr. Rengaraj had constructed a farmhouse and purchased land worth ₹16 crore for real estate business. The total value of the assets owned in his name or his family members was estimated at Rs 23 crore which was disproportionate to his known sources of income. Published - June 20, 2026 12:32 am IST
