Prior this report, the National Economic Council (NEC) approved N83.2 billion for interventions under the Anticipatory Action Task Force (AATF), a programme aimed at mitigating the impact of anticipated flooding and other climate-related emergencies across Nigeria.

The approval comes despite the existence of the Ecological Fund, which receives billions of naira annually and is distributed through federal allocations to the federal, state and local governments for addressing environmental challenges such as flooding, erosion and other ecological disasters.

The latest intervention has once again drawn attention to growing concerns over the management and utilisation of Ecological Fund allocations, particularly by state governments that continue to receive substantial funding but fail to spend it on critical flood-control projects.
