The maiden Kerala Budget of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan has earmarked substantial funds for infrastructure and development projects in the Kannur and Irikkur Assembly constituencies, according to MLAs T.O. Mohanan and Sajeev Joseph.Among the major allocations for the Kannur constituency is ₹20 crore for completing the Kannur Corporation headquarters building. The additional funding is expected to accelerate construction of the new civic complex, which is already midway through completion.Road and transport infrastructure received significant attention, with ₹60 crore allocated for developing a four-lane road from Melechovva to Kanhirode. Another ₹15 crore has been sanctioned for widening and upgrading the Anayidukku road, while ₹15 crore has been earmarked for the renovation of the Thazhe Chovva-Chakkarakkal airport road.Land acquisition for the Nadal and Thazhe Chovva flyovers has received ₹2 crore, while another ₹2 crore has been allocated for land acquisition for the Anayidukku railway overbridge. Other allocations include ₹5 crore for widening and upgrading the Valiyannur-Mudneri Motta road, ₹3 crore for completing tarring works on the Mundayad-Mathukoth road, ₹2 crore each for the Echeri Bank-Pallippoyil road and the Kudukkimotta-Puravoor road beautification project up to the constituency border, and ₹1 crore for the Hajimotta-Macheri road.The Budget has also provided ₹5 crore for constructing a new office building for the Munderi grama panchayat, ₹2 crore for the renovation of Echeri Nallanchikulam, ₹1.5 crore for the Munderi public crematorium and ₹2 crore for a Happiness Park near the Munderi bird sanctuary. Infrastructure development at Mappila Bay harbour has been allotted ₹1 crore.In the Irikkur constituency, the Budget has sanctioned ₹5 crore for the first phase of the long-awaited Irikkur mini civil station, aimed at improving access to government services in the high-range region. A Fire and Rescue Services station has also been approved for Sreekandapuram, fulfilling a longstanding local demand.The Budget further allocates ₹9.5 crore for the construction of a new bridge at Vattiyamthode to improve connectivity and transportation in the area. An additional ₹1 crore has been earmarked for the Eruvatty-Vimalassery-Therthally road project.The MLAs said the allocations reflect the government’s focus on strengthening infrastructure, public services and connectivity while addressing several long-pending development demands in the two constituencies.
