Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to a ceasefire that is scheduled to take effect on Friday, according to a senior United States official, marking a potentially significant step toward easing tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border after months of hostilities.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that both sides had accepted the truce arrangement following renewed exchanges of fire earlier in the day.
“Hezbollah and Israel have agreed to a ceasefire,” the official said on background, adding that negotiators for the United States and Qatar worked out the deal with help from Iran.
“We understand that after the exchange of fire earlier today, Israel and Hezbollah are now in a ceasefire,” the official added.
The breakthrough comes amid growing international concerns over the risk of a wider regional conflict involving Israel, Hezbollah, Iran and other allied groups operating across the Middle East.
