KOLKATA: With three wins from three matches at Nations Cup in Auckland, the Indian women’s hockey team is just two wins away from returning to Pro League. They will first have to get the better of Chile in the semifinal on Saturday and then beat either New Zealand or the USA, who face off in the other semifinal, on Sunday.India have so far beaten the USA, Japan and Uruguay despite conceding at crucial moments in each game — something coach Sjoerd Marijne believes reflects the team’s mentality.“One thing we have spoken about is a winning mentality,” said Marijne to TOI. “At the end, it’s about winning matches. Sometimes you can do it with beautiful hockey and sometimes you just have to get to the end line and be happy with that.”Although the coach is pleased with the team’s performances, he wants his wards to do better when it comes to converting chances.“I am happy with the wins, but we need to keep working on executing our chances. We create more than enough but make it difficult for ourselves,” added the Dutchman, who took over the team earlier this year. The wins, however, have not come easy.Against the USA, India rallied from 0-2 down to win 3-2. Japan pushed them all the way before Lalremsiami’s 49th-minute strike secured a 2-1 victory. Against Uruguay, India were pegged back in the 55th minute, only for Deepika to restore the lead from a penalty corner a minute later.Speaking of Deepika, she has been in brilliant form, scoring four goals in three matches after returning from a lengthy injury lay-off shortly before India’s tour of Argentina.“Of course, we know she has a good penalty corner, but as a player she is also doing well,” the coach said.“She worked really hard to come back after her long injury lay-off, so this is good encouragement for her. The strength and conditioning and medical teams worked hard with her, and I told her to stay focused on why she was doing all the rehab and to keep the goal in her mind.”Marijne has also been pleased with the youngsters and newcomers and wants them to learn from these matches and gain experience of performing under pressure. There are several such players in the squad, including Sonam, Sakshi Rana, Lalthantluangi, Ishika, Shilpi Dabas and Deepika Soreng. For now, though, Marijne’s focus is on winning the tournament and taking India back to Pro League.
