The Tamil Nadu Apex Skill Development Centre for Automobile (TN AutoSkills) has mooted launching a “global automotive skill grid” so that technical personnel can be trained for the global automotive market.Any stakeholder in Coimbatore can come forward to pilot this project, said P. Kasiviswanathan, Managing Director of the Centre, at the inauguration of a conference on electric vehicles and allied industries, organised in Coimbatore city on Friday by the Society for Smart E-Mobility (SSEM).The technical personnel employed in the automotive and allied sectors now are trained to handle one or two specialised jobs. They need to develop their skills to handle vehicles of any brand globally so that they can work in the automobile sector in any country. “They should be trained for end-to-end operations. One industry can take this up as a pilot project,” he said.Mr. Kasiviswanathan told The Hindu later that the training programmes organised by the Council now are tailor-made for Indian conditions, incorporating Indian norms. The curriculum should be expanded to meet the global market demand.The Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation, which has apex bodies for skill development in automobile, healthcare, financial services, logistics, and civil and construction sectors, is looking at developing a facility at about ₹100 crore to cater to more than 40 sectors. There is one such facility in Odisha now.The TN AutoSkills currently runs 52 programmes through 75 partners. The mobility sector is transforming rapidly and there is a demand for skilled manpower globally, he added.S. Chandrasekar, founder trustee and vice president of the SSEM, said Hosur, Coimbatore, Sriperumbudur and nearby areas are emerging as EV clusters and almost 40 % of electric vehicles in the country are manufactured in Tamil Nadu.
