Hundreds fled for cover in New York’s Times Square after gunfire erupted on the street, triggering scenes of chaos in one of the world’s busiest tourist precincts.Police say a teenager is in custody following a violent brawl near Times Square on Thursday afternoon that left one man stabbed and hundreds of people scrambling for safety. The dramatic incident unfolded shortly before 4pm local time at the intersection of 44th Street and Broadway, where witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots ring out among large crowds of tourists and workers.Video from the scene appears to show a young man firing a handgun before sprinting away as panicked bystanders ran for their lives.Authorities said no one was struck by the gunfire, but the sound of shots sent people bolting into nearby shops, restaurants and businesses.Witness Jose Rios said he heard several loud bangs before realising what was happening.“I didn’t see much, but I was down there right around the corner, I heard ‘pow-pow-pow.’ I checked my phone, I see, shots fired near Times square,” he told ABC Eyewitness News.Police said the suspected gunman fled south before colliding with a police officer and running along 42nd Street as officers gave chase.Moments later, authorities took one teenager into custody. But the drama was far from over, with police confirming a second shooting incident occurred a short distance away near 45th Street and Eighth Avenue shortly after the arrest.Workers inside nearby businesses described frantic scenes as crowds poured through the streets seeking shelter.Employees at a souvenir store said they helped people who had fallen during the panic as crowds rushed away from the sound of gunfire.“Insane. I don’t really expect this to happen in this area. Especially. A lot of tourists around,” local worker Abdul said.Police have not yet confirmed whether the teenager in custody is the gunman seen in footage circulating online.Investigators are searching for additional suspects and are continuing to piece together what sparked the violence.More to come.
