Foreign investors purchased an estimated $103 billion worth of U.S. long-term securities in April while increasing their holdings of U.S. Treasury securities by $4 billion, according to the U.S. Treasury Department's latest Treasury International Capital (TIC) report released on Thursday. The data provides a fresh snapshot of overseas appetite for U.S. assets amid heightened scrutiny of global capital flows.Among the largest foreign holders of U.S. Treasuries, Japan raised its holdings to $1.21 trillion in April from $1.19 trillion a month earlier, according to the Treasury report cited by Reuters. The United Kingdom also increased its holdings to $938 billion from $927 billion, while China's Treasury portfolio edged down to $651 billion from $652 billion.Reuters reported that the increase lifted total foreign holdings of U.S. Treasury securities to $9.353 trillion in April, up from March levels but below the record $9.49 trillion recorded in February. The TIC data comes as investors closely monitor overseas demand for U.S. government debt against the backdrop of the Federal Reserve's continued efforts to contain inflation and the ongoing rally in artificial intelligence-related stocks.Investor demand for inflation-protected government debt also remained healthy. A U.S. auction of five-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) on Thursday was well received, supported in part by the recent rise in inflation-adjusted, or real, yields.According to Reuters, the Treasury Department reported a net TIC inflow of $26.1 billion in April. The figure comprised net foreign official inflows of $49.2 billion, partially offset by net private foreign outflows of $23.1 billion.Foreign investors also expanded their holdings of long-term U.S. securities during the month, with net purchases totaling $206 billion, Reuters reported. Private foreign investors accounted for $164.4 billion of those purchases, while foreign official institutions added another $41.6 billion.
