Australia has suffered through its worst snow season in a decade in the early stages of winter, with avid snowgoers warned it’s “not looking good”. Spencers Creek in Mt Kosciuszko has the worst mid-June snow level in a decade.“The snow level is zero,” Sky News meteorologist Tamsin Green said. “It’s essentially joint last with the last time there was zero, which was June 2016, so it’s not looking good.”Victoria’s Mt Buller is also suffering through something similar, as El Nino has brought persistent warmer weather – a deterrent for snowfall. However, Ms Green said there could be some light snowfall over the weekend but it wouldn’t be enough to be a good “ski season starter” ahead of the school holidays. “But the better news is it will be turning colder and drier and it’s all they need and want to be able to fire up the snow guns,” she said.“They’re not going to see a great deal (of snow), but that doesn’t mean they won’t still get some late-season snow.“As long as they get some snow through July, then it won’t be a total write-off, but it’s not been a good start.”At a similar time last year, Spencers Creek had a snow level of 74.9cm, eventually peaking at more than 2.2m on September 1, according to Snowy Hydro. It was the first time since 2022 snow levels had exceeded two metres in the Snowy Mountains.
