DETROIT — Jalen Duren will be a restricted free agent this summer, while Ausar Thompson is eligible for a rookie-scale extension that would begin in the 2027-28 season. Both will likely be expensive and are Detroit Pistons franchise pillars alongside Cade Cunningham on a team that led the Eastern Conference with 60 regular-season wins.Trajan Langdon, Detroit’s president of basketball operations, spoke in May about how the Pistons will look to retain both Duren, an All-NBA Third Team member, and Thompson, who was named to the All-Defensive First Team. But when asked Thursday how negotiations have been progressing, Langdon said “they haven’t been” just yet.“Those will be conversations that will be had. But to be completely honest, you will never know how those conversations go,” Langdon said. Before those conversations really kick into high gear, the Pistons will have the 21st pick in next week’s NBA Draft. Though Langdon mentioned the possibility of moving up in the draft, he expressed confidence in Detroit’s ability to find a quality player if it stays put.“For us, it will be, who’s the best player there,” Langdon said when asked if he’ll target a 3-point shooter or playmaker. “It will be, does that player fit this environment? Does he fit our identity? How can that player help us? Maybe it’s not even next year, but in the future, right? We have players that are going to get expensive. We’re going to have to have our picks hit and be able to help our team.
