New Delhi: West Bengal government has petitioned SC, challenging a Delhi High Court direction allowing the premature release of a life-term convict in the 1993 Kolkata (Bowbazar) blast case.The state's counsel mentioned the matter before a bench headed by CJI Surya Kant for urgent listing. The counsel submitted that the state's Sentence Review Board had recommended against the release of the convict, Md Rashid Khan, who was convicted under the Terrorist and Disruptive Acts Prevention Act. The bench agreed to list the matter.Delhi HIGH COURT ORDEROn June 5, Delhi High Court allowed a petition filed by Khan who had spent over 33 years in prison. The high court considered the petitioner's long incarceration, prison conduct and the reformative philosophy for the premature release.

West Bengal has approached the Supreme Court. The state is challenging a Delhi High Court decision. This decision allowed the early release of Md Rashid Khan. Khan was convicted in the 1993 Bowbazar blast case. He has served over 33 years in prison. The state's Sentence Review Board had opposed his release. The Supreme Court will now hear the matter.
