NEW YORK, June 18 (UPI) -- Parks and Recreation and Mad TV scribe Katie Dippold says a 1980s-era haunted house attraction in her native New Jersey was an inspiration for her new supernatural thriller, Widow's Bay.
"We would go and I was too young for it, and it was terrifying, but I got such a joy out of going to that haunted house, screaming and running in terror and then laughing," Dippold, 46, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview.
"I just love that feeling and I've just been trying to capture that feeling, putting it on the TV screen, my whole life," she said.
"I think of New Jersey in the 1980s. It was like our worlds were smaller than before the Internet and there's a certain nostalgia that we wanted to bring to this island town [of Widow's Bay] and, so, it's a little bit dated and they're a little behind the times and that also isolates them."
